Nearly 800 fitness enthusiasts in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, welcomed New Year by climbing Gaodao Mountain on Jan 1, local media reported.

They walked a 10.3-kilometer route starting from Zhoushan Middle School, passing through the Zhoushan campus of Zhejiang University, and ending at the top of Gaodao Mountain. It takes around two hours to complete the hike.

Eight additional activities were also held during the event, which involved free food and calligraphy.

The event is part of the National New Year Mountain Climbing event, which has been held for the past six years and become famous throughout Zhoushan.

The hike was sponsored by the Zhoushan bureau of culture, broadcasting, television, tourism, and sports and organized by the Zhoushan Sports Center.
