Zhoushan in East China's Zhejiang province reported strong consumer activity during the May Day holiday from May 1 to 5, with 14 key retail enterprises recording total sales of about 62.87 million yuan ($9.22 million), up 3.6 percent year-on-year. The growth was driven by diversified consumption scenarios and coordinated citywide promotional efforts.
During the holiday, the city launched a consumption promotion campaign integrating urban and rural resources, covering six major areas including Dinghai Ancient City, Daishan Island, Shengsi islands, and Zhujiajian Island. These locations combined tourism, culture, and retail to boost spending.
Various districts and counties rolled out cultural and tourism events. In Dinghai district, magic shows, Yueju Opera performances, and music parades attracted visitors, while a carnival at Dinghai Bay Park boosted nighttime activity. Putuo district hosted its first rural theater festival and flower-themed events, alongside new seafood-themed dining options to support evening consumption. Daishan county featured fireworks shows and a spring kite festival, while Shengsi county organized wedding-themed celebrations and interactive parades. A flower-themed market in Xincheng district drew about 200,000 visits and generated around 9.2 million yuan in related spending.
Targeted consumption policies also supported growth. Dinghai issued 300,000 yuan in retail vouchers, Putuo distributed 2 million yuan in car purchase subsidies and 600,000 yuan in retail vouchers, and Daishan offered 300,000 yuan in auto subsidies, boosting demand for big-ticket goods such as vehicles and home appliances.
