Ningbo-Zhoushan Port in East China's Zhejiang province began developing of its first fully electric azimuth tugboat on Nov 21, marking the port's first step into this vessel category.
The vessel is being built in Jiangsu province by Zhoushan Port Haitonglunbo under Ningbo Zhoushan Port. Designed according to the latest China Classification Society standards, the tugboat measures about 38 meters in length and 10.5 meters in beam. Its design incorporates the latest advances in green and intelligent technology, ensuring zero emissions of sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and particulates during operation.
Compared with fuel-powered tugboats, the fully electric model delivers zero emissions, reduced noise, and improved onboard comfort. It is expected to lower annual energy costs by about 1.2 million yuan ($169,401). The vessel is equipped with an intelligent energy-efficiency system that monitors real-time consumption, analyzes equipment performance, and provides data support for optimized operation.
The tugboat is scheduled for completion and deployment by the end of 2026 and will handle tasks such as assisting large vessels during berthing and departure, as well as providing escort services within the port area.
