An exhibition titled Lisbon Maru Rescue Incident: An Exhibition of Archival Records opened in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, on Sept 3.

It marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (1931-45) and the World Anti-Fascist War, revisiting the Lisbon Maru rescue incident and honoring the bravery of local fishermen.

The Lisbon Maru, a Japanese vessel carrying 1,816 British prisoners of war, was sunk by a United States submarine near the waters of Dongji Island in 1942. Despite heavy fire, Zhoushan fishermen rowed small boats into dangerous waters, saving 384 men. The rescue remains a powerful symbol of courage and friendship between China and Britain.

The exhibition's three sections feature historical documents, oral accounts, relics, photographs, and multimedia displays that recount the dramatic events and lasting bonds forged.

During the opening ceremony, performances and speeches recalled the incident, including a song inspired by the rescue and a lecture tracing the history of the Lisbon Maru. Attendees toured the exhibition, reflecting on the courage displayed and the enduring spirit of solidarity.

The exhibit will run until January 2026 and is open to the public, inviting visitors to revisit history, pay tribute to the rescuers, and appreciate the enduring ties formed during wartime.
