Shengsi fishermen's song expert honored as national ICH inheritor

Shu Xinhu, an inheritor of Shengsi fishermen's songs, has recently been honored as a representative inheritor of national-level intangible cultural heritage items, according to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

This marks the first time someone from Shengsi county in Zhoushan, Zhejiang province has received this prestigious recognition.

At the age of 76, Shu, a native of Shengsi, has deep roots in the local fishing culture and marine life, drawing inspiration from over a decade working as a fisherman. His journey began in 2003 with his first fishermen's song, which bolstered his confidence in preserving this unique cultural form.

Since 2004, Shu has worked to preserve and carry on Shengsi fishermen's songs. His efforts include preserving traditional songs, training apprentices, and creating new compositions.

Shu's contributions have been pivotal in the inheriting of Shengsi fishermen's songs, from early work songs to their inclusion in the national intangible cultural heritage list in 2021.

He established his studio and the Fishermen's Song Hall to engage younger generations in this cultural tradition. Over two decades, Shu has restored over 60 traditional songs and created award-winning new pieces.

Upon receiving the national honor, Shu expressed his commitment to continuing his work, aiming to inspire new generations and continue the legacy of Shengsi fishermen's songs.
