With its paws gripping the fence and small eyes curiously observing its surroundings, a high-resolution photo of an otter – under national second-class protection – was a first for Jintang Island, Zhoushan, Zhejiang province.
"Otters are nocturnal. I've been staking out for four nights at the area with a high frequency of otter activity," said He Jibai, a staff member at the Jintang Otter Conservation Station and the photographer.
Since the conservation station's began in Jintang over a year ago, infrared cameras have been set up across the island to capture otter activity. While numerous videos have been recorded, this is the first time a high-resolution photo has been taken manually at close range.
He explained that the otters on Jintang Island belong to the Eurasian otter species and have been spotted in various locations on Jintang Island.
The conservation station is currently conducting DNA sampling on otter feces to estimate their numbers. Additionally, they are investigating the otters' diet and habitat to better understand their range and behavior, aiming to identify key areas for research and protection.
