Dongji Island, situated in Putuo district of Zhoushan in East China's Zhejiang province, is embracing a transformative journey towards sustainable development and ecotourism.

With its pristine blue waters and warm hospitality, Dongji Island welcomes visitors with a unique charm that reflects its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty.

The island's fishing industry serves as a cornerstone of its economy, showcasing a harmonious balance between resource conservation and economic growth. Through the adoption of cutting-edge technologies such as liquid nitrogen refrigeration, Dongji Island has seen a significant increase in fishery production and value. In 2023, the installation of refrigeration equipment led to a 7-percent year-on-year growth in fishery output.

In addition to its thriving fishing sector, Dongji Island boasts a unique blend of cultural and natural attractions. The island's tourism sector has experienced rapid growth, with a 23.03 percent increase in visitor numbers to more than 370,000 and a 22.5 percent rise in tourism revenue of 468 million yuan ($64.2 million) in 2023, driven by the introduction of high-end accommodations and innovative tourism services.

Moreover, Dongji Island's commitment to green energy and environmental conservation is evident through the establishment of the nation's first self-healing smart microgrid powered by solar energy. Collaborating with the State Grid, the island has dramatically reduced its carbon footprint while ensuring a reliable and sustainable energy supply for its residents.
