The East China Sea Ballad or Donghaiyao created by Shengsi county, Zhoushan, Zhejiang province has been shortlisted as a provincial boutique art performance for tourists, the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism announced on Dec 13.

The Donghaiyao is a representative work of the county's fishermen's songs, which were listed as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2021.

It is part of recent efforts by county authorities to tap into its maritime culture to advance the in-depth integration of culture and tourism.

The work uses elements of traditional culture such as fishermen's songs, chants, and folk music, and incorporates them into performances of singing, dancing, and theatrical displays, showcasing the pristine natural landscapes and cultural landmarks and utilizing local scenic spots as stages.

It highlights the distinctive local cultural characteristics, folk customs, and humanistic spirit of Shengsi, while enhancing the level of cultural tourism consumption, extending tourists' visits, and promoting improvements in related tourism expenditures such as dining and accommodation within the scenic area.
