Zhoushan enterprise taps into discarded mussel shells

Updated : 2024-01-23 (chinadaily.com.cn)

Zhoushan Sailaite Marine Technology Co has garnered attention for its innovative use of discarded mussel shells.

The company recently received two substantial orders totaling nearly 10 million yuan ($1.40 million) for their red mangrove pest control and management products.

These products, derived from discarded mussel shells, represent just a fraction of the high-value offerings developed by Sailaite. Leveraging mussel shells as a raw material, the company has successfully created an array of advanced products, including marine micro-nano fruit and vegetable cleansers, soil microelement balancers, organic pollutant degradation photocatalysts, mangrove nano ecological antifreeze agents, and aquatic product preservatives.

Notably, all these products have achieved industrialized production and have been distributed nationwide, generating a total output value exceeding 10 million yuan last year.

Sailaite's innovative approach has also addressed the pressing issue of waste mussel shell disposal by applying its capacity to process at least 3,000 metric tons of mussel shells annually. This has not only contributed to environmental sustainability but has also proven to be a commercially viable solution.

Moreover, the company's exploration into mussel shells has revealed their rich content of trace metal elements, such as strontium, which not only foster mangrove growth but also hold significant benefits for human health.

Guo Jian, Sailaite's general manager, highlighted the development of a strontium-rich tea utilizing mussel shells, aiming to extend this technology to fruit and vegetable cultivation in Zhoushan. This initiative seeks to enrich Zhoushan's agricultural products with strontium, thereby empowering ecological agriculture through technological innovation.
