The Dapukou container terminal at Ningbo Zhoushan Port unveiled an autonomous driving test zone on Jan 9, local media reported.

The test zone showcases the integration of cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and big data that enables unmanned and intelligent transportation and container operations.

Within the test zone, unmanned terminal tractors, guided by intelligent guide vehicles, navigate through bridges and enter the smart lock station. They efficiently unlock containers and proceed to the berths where cargo ships are located.

These unmanned terminal tractors demonstrate not only skilled navigation around manned terminal tractors and obstacles but also seamless coordination with remotely controlled bridge cranes and automated rail-mounted gantry cranes for collaborative operations.

A staff member of the terminal noted that the terminal aims to achieve a high level of automation in its operations by the end of 2025. This will involve implementing an unmanned autonomous driving mode with the assistance of intelligent connected vehicles in a remote-controlled setting.

Overall, the launch of the autonomous driving test zone at the container terminal represents a significant step towards achieving a fully automated and intelligent port. By leveraging AI, the IoT, and big data, the terminal is poised to enhance efficiency, safety, and productivity in its container handling processes.
