Putuo district in Zhoushan, Zhejiang province has won the title of National Safe Fishery Model, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs announced on Nov 14. The district's Shenjiamen Fishing Port was also awarded the title of National Civilized Fishing Port.

Putuo, which is home to 70 fishing villages, 2,316 registered fishing vessels, and more than 72,000 fishermen, has in recent years taken a series of actions to enhance security management of fishery production.

For example, authorities have established a special team for fishery safety production supervision to ensure the implementation of safety responsibilities, carried out law enforcement actions to rectify safety hazards, held training courses to improve safety competence, and upgraded emergency communication networks to avoid disasters by ensuring a smooth flow of safety information such as weather warnings.

From 2021 to 2022, there were no major fishing production safety accidents or waterborne traffic accidents in the district.

Shenjiamen Fishing Port is China's largest aquatic product distribution center and home to 59 fishing piers and 345 operating businesses.

Putuo authorities have over the past few years been focusing on improving the infrastructure of the fishing port, enhancing port services, and strengthening safety supervision in an effort to create a fishing port with clear property rights, standardized management, a clean environment, and excellent services.

In terms of safety supervision, the fishery department has tightened regulatory responsibilities, standardized the training needed to obtain a fishing crew certificate, and empowered digital technology for management and control.

Authorities have also set up specialized institutions responsible for port construction and planning, project promotion, and prevention and control of water pollution in the port area.
