Liuheng Island in Putuo district, Zhoushan, Zhejiang province has been making efforts to expedite development of its marine economy over the past 20 years.

Specifically, the island has built a national key green ship maintenance base and made significant strides in developing clean power and constructing major infrastructure.

The ship repair output value and number of completed ships at Liuheng account for nearly 30 percent of the national total, and three Liuheng ship enterprises are among the top 10 ship repair companies worldwide.

The island was also approved to construct two LNG projects by the National Development and Reform Commission on Dec 7, 2022.

One of the projects is a 10.2-billion-yuan ($1.46 billion) LNG facility funded by Sinopec Group. The facility will include a loading dock, an unloading dock, a workboat terminal and five 220,000-cubic-meter LNG storage tanks.

The LNG terminal is expected to receive up to 7.18 million metric tons per year, according to authorities.

The other project is a 9.5-billion-yuan LNG plant by Zhejiang Energy Group that will have a dock, four 220,000-cubic-meter LNG storage tanks and other related facilities. The facility is expected to receive six million tons of LNG a year.

In addition, the island has been channeling more resources into improving infrastructure, with work on the Luheng Highway Bridge connecting Ningbo Zhoushan Port progressing rapidly. The bridge is expected to be completed and open to traffic in 2027.
