Dapeng Island in Dinghai district, Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, has over the past year been ramping up efforts to renovate ancient buildings as part of its rural vitalization drive.
The island has invested more than 50 million yuan ($6.86 million) in the renovation of more than 30 ancient buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911), as well as the Republic of China period (1911-1949).
A senior of the island surnamed Yang said that the renovated houses not only improve residents' living environment, but also attract flocks of painters and tourists, which will greatly boost tourism on the island.
Authorities have also channeled more resources into improving infrastructure, public services, landscapes, and ecological restoration, including building a wharf for docking ferries, a tourist service center, and a 2,700-meter seawall.
In addition, construction of a cross-sea bridge connecting the island with Jintang Island is currently underway and is expected to open to traffic in 2025.
