A group of ancient irrigation works in Zhoushan were recently included on a list of key water conservancy project heritages in Zhejiang province.
The eight entries include the Lianquan Ancient Well, Haiyin Pond, Xixin Pond, Sanbatang Dike, and the Zhongxiangxi Sluice Gates in Putuo district, Kaomen Dam and Wuchen River in Daishan county, and Dongcheng New Water Way in Dinghai district.
It is worth mentioning that the Lianquan Ancient Well has been recognized as a municipal key cultural relic under protection since 2010. Located in Baishan village in Putuo district, it was dug in 1607 and has been well preserved since the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). It witnessed a fight between the local people and invaders more than 400 years ago.
These water conservancy projects boast a long history and have significant historical and cultural value. In recent years, local authorities have surveyed the city's water cultural heritages and established backup reservoirs for water conservancy engineering heritage sites such as ancient wells and lakes.
These efforts not only inherit the history the projects carry, but also help the city formulate its protection and utilization plans.
According to the local water resources bureau, Zhoushan will spare no effort to protect and utilize these water conservancy engineering heritage resources.
