Construction of a 1000-metric-ton passenger terminal nears completion on Dongji Island in Putuo district, Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, local media reported on Sept 12.

The scene provides a glimpse into the island's efforts to improve its infrastructure in an attempt to bolster its tourism industry, which will in turn aid its common prosperity drive.

Authorities have over the past few years been channeling more resources into well-being projects, including installing seawater desalination and electric power facilities, to improve the island's transportation and living environment.

Wu Fangzhong, who has run a homestay on the island for many years, said that the upgraded infrastructure has significantly strengthened his confidence in expanding business.

The local government has also been striving to develop related businesses such as sea fishing and sports competitions to attract more tourists.

The island has become a hotspot travel destination and received 209,000 tourists from January to July, which generated tourism revenue of 250 million yuan ($34.32 million).

In addition, authorities have been focusing on attracting more professionals to help the homestay and catering industries develop in a healthy and sustainable way.

Nearly 30 homestays have been upgraded since last year and new businesses such as snack bars, bookstores, and cafes have been introduced to the island, creating jobs for 180 residents.
