The Zhoushan hairtail from Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, was awarded the first geographical indication prize, the Zhejiang Provincial Market Supervision and Administration Bureau announced on Sept 5.

Two geographical indication products in the province won the honor; the other is West Lake Longji Tea from Hangzhou, the capital of the province.

The prize is a one-of-a-kind honor for the city, marking authorities' persistent efforts to protect intellectual property over the past few years.

The Zhoushan hairtail, which was designated as a national-level geographical indication product in 2009, has become a well-known brand.

A total of 68 companies in the city have used the geographical indication brand for 258 seafood products.
