Shengsi county in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, has made remarkable achievements in economic and social development over the past 20 years.

Specifically, the county has made significant strides in marine industries related to ports, clean power, tourism and fishing and has established a complete mussel-breeding industrial chain.

Shengsi is currently home to the world-class Yangshan deepwater port and a 24,700 mu (1,646.67 hectares) mussel breeding ranch that generates an annual output value of more than 800 million yuan ($111.93 million).

The county's tourism industry has also received a boost, with several popular islands such as Shengshan, Gouqi and Taohua islands as well as boutique homestays featured.

Shengsi has also been making efforts to improve people's well-being by launching the Green Rural Revival Program, which was put forward in 2003 and is aimed at promoting integrated urban-rural development, advancing rural vitalization and achieving common prosperity.

Authorities have channeled more resources into improving the living environment by upgrading roads and ferries, renovating old residential communities, and strengthening social governance.

The county has completed renovations on 100 blocks since 2019, and 1,903 households have reaped benefits.

The local government has also been exploring ways to achieve common prosperity. The per capita disposable income in the county's rural areas increased from 5,462 yuan in 2003 to 44,249 yuan in 2022, and its overall GDP was 13 billion yuan in 2022.
