Zhoushan in East China's Zhejiang province has over the past two decades made remarkable achievements in marine economy, with the added value in that field accounting for 68 percent of its GDP.

One of the significant contributors to the marine economy is the city's shipbuilding and repair industry; its Liuheng Island is currently home to three global top 10 shipbuilding enterprises.

The island has also made significant progress in advanced manufacturing, clean power and petrochemical new materials, with two 10-billion-yuan ($1.39 billion) LNG projects having been launched there.

The island offers a glimpse into Zhoushan's significant strides in marine economy, in that it has established a modern marine industrial system comprising nine industries such as green petrochemicals, energy trade settlement, modern marine fisheries, marine tourism, shipbuilding, marine electronic information, marine services and clean power and equipment.

Zhoushan has also been focusing on nurturing emerging industries including wind power, hydrogen energy and blue carbon, as well as strengthening innovation by setting up research institutes such as the East China Sea Lab, the Daishan New Material Institute and the YRD Marine Biomedicine Innovation Center.

In addition, Zhoushan has been striving to bolster its traditional industries. It has an annual seafood processing capacity of 1.2 million metric tons, accounting for more than 50 percent of the provincial total, and the annual output of its pelagic fisheries is 735,000 tons, accounting for 20 percent of the national total.
