The ecological environment in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, was rated as Grade I in 2021, with its ecological quality index coming in at 72.5, the Department of Ecology and Environment of Zhejiang Province announced on June 8.

The assessment shows that the city is relatively biodiverse and has a relatively high proportion of natural ecosystem coverage as well as a strong ecological structure.

Class I and II seawater in Zhoushan's coastal waters accounted for 22.5 percent and 20 percent of the city's total in 2021, respectively.

Air quality in Zhoushan was excellent, with 98.1 percent of days in the year experiencing good air quality.

This was largely due to the implementation of a series of measures rolled out by authorities, including bay conservation, integrated coastal zone management, and marine outfall treatment.

Zhoushan also reported remarkable improvements in environmental quality in 2022, according to a report recently released by the Zhoushan bureau of ecology and environment.

The report shows that all surface water located within municipal control sections and centralized water sources at or above the county level met the required quality standards.

Air quality in Zhoushan was excellent, with 97.8 percent of days in the year experiencing good air quality.

Notably, the average environmental noise level met the required standards.

Class I and II seawater in Zhoushan's coastal waters accounted for 25 percent and 26.7 percent of the city's total in 2022, respectively.
