Ningbo Zhoushan Port opens new waterway

Updated : 2023-06-13 (chinadaily.com.cn)

The Yuxingnao Waterway, the most convenient channel connecting Ningbo Zhoushan Port to Jiaxing Port in northern Zhejiang province opened on June 7, according to local media reports.

The Yuxingnao Waterway is an important part of the river-sea combined transport system in Zhejiang province and will enhance Jiaxing Port's role as a hub in the Yangtze River Delta for river-sea combined transport.

Previously, the coastal public navigation route announced by the maritime department of Jiaxing Port was just one Jinshan Waterway, ship traffic was nearly at capacity, and it was difficult for heavy-duty ships to enter the port by tide due to the shallow water.

The shallowest water depth in the Yuxingnao Waterway is now 8.4 meters, allowing 50,000 metric tons of ships to sail in both directions.

The Yuananao Waterway is the first project of Jiaxing's offshore waterway. The Jinshan waterway has nearly 30 kilometers of shallow section, with the shallowest section being just 7.2 meters. Next, dredging work will be carried out in September to improve the city's waterway navigation capacity.

After the completion of the construction of Jiaxing's offshore waterway, the number of ships above 10,000 tons in Jiaxing's offshore waterway is expected to increase from the current 25.6 per day to 53.1. Ships above the 10,000-ton class will see a 130-kilometer reduction in detours, which is expected to reduce transportation costs by about 260 million yuan ($36.52 million) for shipping enterprises every year.
