Daishan makes progress in rural vitalization

Updated : 2023-06-12 (chinadaily.com.cn)

Daishan county in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, has in recent years implemented a series of measures to advance its rural vitalization drive.

Measures include improving the living environment in rural areas, nurturing characteristic industries, strengthening public services, promoting social civility, and carrying out digital reform.

Tukou village in the county's Daidong town, is a shining example of what the county hopes to achieve through its sustainable development efforts, with a salt culture museum and a camping site built in the village.

Zhou Lingling, who is in charge of the camping base, said that she decided to build facilities for camping and fishing in the village largely due to its natural environment and geographical location.

The two facilities provide more jobs to residents and increase their incomes, with the collective income of the village in 2022 reaching 3.8 million yuan ($531,121.39), local authorities said.

Authorities have also been leveraging its natural resources to develop characteristic industries, with Shuanghe village tapping into its stone resources to develop tourism and homestay industries.

The per capita disposable income of permanent residents in the county's fishing villages in 2022 was 46,115 yuan, a year-on-year increase of 7.1 percent, according to official statistics.

The county is currently home to seven demonstration towns seeking to build 21 beautiful villages, and it will continue efforts to advance digitalization in rural areas as part of efforts to build future villages.

The concept of a "future village", which was mentioned in a provincial government report released in 2019, refers to a rural development project that aims to make villages more people-oriented, environmentally-friendly and digitalized.
