Three islands in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, were recognized nationally for their sustainability efforts, the Ministry of Natural Resources announced on World Oceans Day on June 8.

The three islands are Shengsi county's Huaniao Island, Gouqi Island and Daishan county's Xiushan Island.

Huaniao Island

Huaniao Island, which is renowned for its stunning sea views and a lighthouse that was built in the 19th century, has in recent years been exploring ways to integrate tourism with culture and wellness.

The island that initiated the customized tourism was listed among the province's first to build a demonstration area for sustainable development.

Gouqi Island

Gouqi Island has been leveraging its natural resources and channeling more resources towards pursuing technological innovation and developing the mussel-breeding industry. Its mussels have been designated National Geographical Indication Products and its marine ranch was listed as the most beautiful pastoral area in the province.

Xiushan Island

As a national ecological town, Xiushan Island has made a series of efforts to restore its marine ecology, treat sewage and improve the living environment in its rural areas.
