Xiaosha taps cultural resources to boost rural vitalization

Updated : 2023-04-27 (chinadaily.com.cn)

Xiaosha sub-district in Dinghai district, Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, has in recent years been making efforts to leverage its cultural resources to drive rural vitalization.

For example, the sub-district has taken advantage of its connection with Sanmao to develop its cultural tourism industry. Sanmao was the pen name of the late Echo Chan, a Chinese contemporary novelist, writer and translator from Taiwan. Her ancestral residence, which was built by her grandfather, is located in the Miaoqiao village in the sub-district. Sanmao is best known for her book Stories of the Sahara

Flocks of tourists attended activities like cultural and creative fairs and concerts held during the award ceremony of the 4th Sanmao Prose Prize on April 20.

Authorities have also rolled out measures to help residents develop industries such as fruit and vegetable picking, as well as homestay.

In addition, authorities have created business models including bookstores, cafés, cultural and creative fairs, as well as chain restaurants, all of which play a significant role in providing more jobs to locals.
