Zhoushan uses digital technology to improve ecological environment

Updated : 2022-12-07 (chinadaily.com.cn)

Zhoushan in East China's Zhejiang province have since this year adopted digital technologies to improve its ecological environment.

For example, authorities in the city's Putuo district have launched a pilot program that has invested 625 million yuan ($87.25 million) to treat the ecological environment of Shenjiamen fishing harbor.

Authorities have taken a series of measures, including dredging sediments, dismantling obsolete wharfs and building ecological corridors, to improve restoration of the marine ecosystem and protection of the fishing harbor.

Meanwhile, the program involving the restoration of the marine ecosystem has been promoted to Zhoushan's four counties and districts, with Shengsi county receiving 250 million yuan in subsidies for ecosystem services.

Zhoushan has since last year raised 1.35 billion fish fries and added 7,091 mu (472.73 hectares) of greening spaces. The city's afforestation rate now stands at 50.66 percent.

As of June 2022, 935 marine species and 1,407 terrestrial species had been discovered in the city.

Zhoushan's Wuzhishan Island Nature Reserve is currently home to about 13,000 birds.

In addition, crowds of dolphins had appeared at the Shengsi county's Shengsi Bay many times.
