The Zhoushan area of the China (Zhejiang) Pilot Free Trade Zone in East China's Zhejiang province has over the past decade made significant progress in upgrading and promoting sustainability in its ship maintenance industry.

One of the achievements it has made is the formulation of a standard management system for ship repair enterprises. The system was designated as an institutional innovation achievement by the State Council, China’s cabinet, in 2020.

The system, which is the first of its kind in the country, has also been replicated and promoted across the country.

Klynveld Peat Marwick Goerdeler said the system will be key to improving the city's traditional ship repair techniques and providing an institutional basis for the operations of ship repair companies.

Zhoushan had in 2018 launched a campaign to improve the governance of its ship repair enterprises and the measures taken include helping ship maintenance companies reduce emissions as well as promoting closed, clean and efficient painting facilities in the city.

In addition, the city has adopted cutting-edge technologies such as high-pressure water derusting and paint mist treatment to improve its competitiveness.
