2 Zhoushan communities win national recognition for age-friendliness

Updated : 2022-11-01 (chinadaily.com.cn)

The National Health Commission and the China National Committee on Ageing recently designated 999 communities across the nation as national model age-friendly communities.

Of the 999 listed communities, two are in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province - Wojingtan village in Daishan county and Huangsha village in Shengsi county.

Wojingtan village has in recent years posted outstanding performances in improving its services for seniors. Some of efforts made include the establishment of a home-based care service center, creating arts and sports teams for the elderly, as well as installing IoT (Internet of Things) equipment in the homes of elderly people who live alone.

Over at Huangsha village, authorities have installed monitoring devices in 29 one-person households in which residents are aged 80 or older, held buffets for seniors aged 70 and above at traditional festivals, as well as upgraded barrier-free facilities.

Chinese authorities plan to create 5,000 age-friendly communities from 2021 to 2025, according to the National Health Commission.
