Zhoushan in East China's Zhejiang province has over the past decade been ramping up efforts to improve its elderly care services.

For example, authorities have established eight "happiness stations" that provide one-stop services to elderly people who live on remote islands within Zhoushan.

The "happiness station" on Dachangtu Island in Zhoushan is home to an elderly care center where professional nursing workers and volunteers offer a wide range of services such as cash deposit and withdrawal, online purchasing, delivery of takeaway food, maintenance of electrical appliances and first aid.

In addition, a special team visits the station regularly to provide services like haircuts, massages and health monitoring for elderly people.

To date, working staff and volunteers have provided 245 regular services and more than 3,200 ordering services that have benefitted over 17,800 residents of islands including Changbai, Panzhi, Baisha and Huni.

The Zhoushan bureau of civil affairs also released a guideline earlier this year to optimize the management of such stations and provide better elderly care services.
