A Nobel laureate boosts Zhoushan's wellness industry

Randy W. Schekman, who has won a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2013, recently signed an agreement with Putuo International Healthcare Industry Center in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province. 

Schekman, focusing on research on how different genes regulate different aspects of the transports, will come to Zhoushan regularly to provide technical support as a chief scientific advisor of Sinocell Technology Ltd, according to the agreement. 

Zhang Luping, assistant of the general manager of Sinocell, said that Schekman's research is in line with her company's core business and the Schekman's joining the company will greatly advance the development of the company's cell technology. 

The agreement is an epitome of the city's rapid progress in the development of wellness industry, said a local official. 

Established in 2021, the 350-million-yuan ($48.63 million) Sinocell is engaged in business such as cell banking, R&D of cell drugs and autoimmune cells. 

Putuo district is currently home to seven cell technology enterprises, some of which are focused on cell technology research and others are engaged in collection and supply of cellular materials, according to authorities. 

One of the reasons behind the boom is that Putuo has over the past years taken a string of measures to develop the healthcare industry. 

For example, Putuo has held forum for attracting investment for four consecutive years, during which deals for 36 projects were signed.

Putuo has also been making efforts to provide better administrative services and improve business environment. 

The district is currently home to more than 120 healthcare enterprises, generating a combined revenue of 930 million yuan. 

The district has welcomed more than 120 top talents with masters' degree or above, 13 of whom are national and provincial level talents.

Putuo has cultivated four national high-tech enterprises.
