Zhoushan's air quality was ranked first among Zhejiang cities and third among the country's cities in the January-July period, local authorities announced at a news conference on Sept 6.

The city's average concentration of PM 2.5 in the first seven months of this year fell to 15 micrograms per cubic meter, a 6.25 percent year-on-year reduction. Meanwhile, the city's ratio of days with fine air quality rose to 96.7 percent.

Such achievements are an affirmation of Zhoushan's efforts to control pollution and protect the environment.

The city has in recent years been focused on improving the water environment and building zero direct sewage discharge areas. The water quality compliance rate of centralized drinking water sources was maintained at 100 percent and the Class I and Class II seawater in the coastal waters of the city accounted for 38.7 percent of the total, a year-on-year increase of 3.3 percent.

The city has established a sound soil pollution prevention and control system, and the safe utilization rate of contaminated arable land and that of contaminated land both reached 100 percent. The city was listed among the national zero-waste cities in 2021. Zhoushan's centralized disposal rate of hazardous wastes in July was the highest in the province.
