1st online nomination exhibition of Zhoushan's fishermen paintings underway

Updated : 2022-08-19 (chinadaily.com.cn)

The first online nomination exhibition of Zhoushan's fishermen paintings kicked off on Aug 18 and will run till Aug 28.

The exhibition is co-organized by Zhoushan's bureau of culture, radio, television, tourism and sports and the arts and literary association in East China's Zhejiang province.

Artworks created by 13 painters from Dinghai district, Putuo district, Shengsi county and Daishan county – all of which are under the jurisdiction of Zhoushan - are on display at the exhibition. These artworks feature scenes of fishermen at work, fishery customs and bold colors.

The exhibition is aimed at offering guidance to these nominees to help them become more creative.

The creation of fisherman paintings started in the early 1980s in Zhoushan. In 1987, a Zhoushan modern folk painting exhibition was held at the National Art Museum of China in Beijing, and had received acclaim from artists in the capital.

In 1988, Dinghai, Putuo, Daishan and Shengsi were named "the hometown of modern Chinese folk paintings" by the Ministry of Culture.

Fishermen painters break away from widely accepted coloring methods and depict the dreams, impressions, aspirations of fishermen in loud colors. These works have won praise from experts and audiences at home and abroad.
