A newly developed desulfurization device was installed on a container ship under Mediterranean Shipping Company S. A. on July 10 at Huafeng Ship Maintenance Company located in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province.

The device, which was developed by Zhejiang Energy Group and Zhejiang University, measures 21 meters in height and has a diameter of 6.1 meters.

According to Gao Xiang, a professor at Zhejiang University and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said that the device will reduce the amount of pollution produced by the ship by more than 50 percent.

It will take about 33 days for engineers to complete the installation of the device.

Such technology has already been widely applied by ship maintenance enterprises based in Zhoushan and more than half of Zhejiang Energy Group's orders for the device come from the city.

The technology has also been adopted by some well-known shipping companies including Pacific International Lines (PTE) Ltd, which has had the device installed on 150 of its ships.

The technology is expected to generate 1 billion yuan ($148 million) in revenue for Zhejiang Energy Group this year.
