The rooftop photovoltaic power generation project of Zhoushan Changhong International Shipyard Co Ltd recently started operating in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province.

It is the largest photovoltaic power generation project to not remove tiles from the roof in Zhejiang.

Xu Cui, who is in charge of Changhong's PV project, said that attaching PV panels to colored steel without removing the tiles not only saves about 30 percent in installation costs, but also avoids the suspension of factories.

The project has a combined coverage area of 200,000 square meters and involves Changhong's six factories. With more than 35,000 PV modules, it has a total installed capacity of 19,000 kilowatts.

In addition to powering Changhong's factories, the project will also be connected to Zhoushan's power grid.

After being connected to the power grid, it is expected to generate 18.83 million kilowatt hours per year, saving 7,783 metric tons in standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 15,259 tons.

In recent years, Zhoushan has ramped up efforts to promote eco-friendly development by supporting the green and clean energy industries.

The city was recently approved to become the provincial demonstration zone for hydrogen fuel cell-powered vehicles.

In 2021, Zhoushan established one hydrogen fueling station, and five hydrogen fuel cell-powered vehicles were operating in the city.

As of the end of April, Zhoushan had invested 34 million yuan ($5.07 million) in becoming a provincial demonstration zone.

The city will promote the application of hydrogen fuel cells in port logistics and other fields, build a research platform for the hydrogen industry, and produce hydrogen with renewable energy sources.

By the end of 2025, more than 300 hydrogen fuel cell-powered vehicles are expected to be operating in the Zhoushan, and more than five hydrogen fueling stations will be established.
