The Zhejiang-Papua New Guinea International Maritime Academy was recently recognized as one of the first 29 Belt and Road Initiative Silk Road academies by Zhejiang provincial authorities.

The maritime academy was established by Zhoushan-based Zhejiang International Maritime College and Papua New Guinea-based Pacific Maritime Training College in 2018.

ZIMC boasts advanced experience in training professionals for the international maritime service industry and can offer high-quality educational resources to countries involved in the BRI, including Papua New Guinea, to help locals seek jobs, according to ZIMC.

The Zhejiang-Papua New Guinea International Maritime Academy is dedicated to establishing strong cooperative relations between Zhejiang and Papua New Guinea and assisting PMTC in establishing personnel training systems in seamanship and marine engineering technology.

The maritime academy has also cooperated with the government of Papua New Guinea and PMTC to set up the Zhejiang-Papua New Guinea Maritime Culture Research Center and organize consultations between Zhejiang and Papua New Guinea on maritime education and training.

In 2019, the maritime academy helped train teachers from PTMC and since 2020, due to COVID-19 outbreak, the maritime academy has been maintaining online exchanges with PMTC.
