Zhoushan home to more wildlife

Zhoushan in East China's Zhejiang province is now home to a larger variety of wildlife, local media reported on May 22.

In 2021, the city's Putuo district recorded 522 species of insect, 435 species of higher plant, 185 species of macro fungi, 32 species of bird, two species of amphibian, and one species of reptile.

According to the latest research on marine life in Zhoushan, the city is home to nearly 1,200 species of marine life, including 237 species of phytoplankton and 227 species of nekton.

The following are some of Zhoushan's most notable species.

The Black-faced spoonbill, or Platalea minor, is a large white wading bird with a distinctively shaped beak that looks like a spoon or a "pi pa" (a Chinese musical instrument). It belongs to the ibis and spoonbill family Threskiornithidae, has the most limited distribution among all six spoonbill species. It is also the only endangered spoonbill species.
