The inaugural meeting of the Donghai Laboratory was held in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province on May 17.
Built by the Zhoushan municipal government, Zhejiang University, and the Second Institute of Oceanography, the lab focuses on the research of marine environment perception, marine power system, and marine green resources.
The lab will be staffed with high-caliber experts from around the world, and will by 2025 have research teams with combined about 1,000 experts, according to Chen Wenbin, deputy director of the preparation office of the Donghai Laboratory.

This year, the lab will build more than 10 research teams with more than 150 experts in AI marine technology, ocean observation, green hydrogen, underwater robot, marine ecology, and blue carbon.
The groundbreaking ceremony of the lab's headquarters industrial park was held on the same day. With a total area of 160 mu (10.67 hectares), the 1.5-billion-yuan ($222.63 million) industrial park will be constructed in five years.
