Two districts and two counties in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, are ramping up efforts to develop marine economies with different focuses.

Dinghai district is focusing on oil products, grain and oil. In the first quarter of this year, the district's grain and oil processing industry generated 1.527 billion yuan ($224.91 million) in output, up 54.53 percent year-on-year.

The output value of the district's petrochemical industry expanded by 90.5 percent year-on-year to 3.55 billion yuan during the same period.

Putuo district is aiming to transform itself into a new hub of the modern marine industry by upgrading traditional industries and cultivating emerging industries.

It has already built the largest eco-friendly shipbuilding base in China, and three of its shipbuilding companies are among the top 10 in the country.

The deep processing rate of aquatic products in the district has exceeded 55 percent, with the deep processing of tuna and sleeve-fish accounting for 60 percent and 50 percent of the national totals, respectively.

Meanwhile, Liuheng Island in Putuo has been developing its clean energy, port equipment manufacturing and bulk commodity storage and transportation industries by leveraging its advantageous location and solid industrial foundation.

Daishan county is making full use of its abundant renewable resources, including wind energy, tidal current energy, and solar energy, to build a green energy industrial chain.

For example, the tidal stream generator unit in Daishan was connected to the State grid after two months of trial operations on April 29.

The unit, which boasts the world's largest tidal stream generator, is expected to generate 2 million kilowatt hours of electricity and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 19.94 million metric tons per year.

Shengsi county, meanwhile, is striving to develop a mariculture industry centering around mussels, large yellow croakers, and white shrimp.

Ganxie village is home to the county's largest mussel farming base, which has a total area of 1,680 mu (112 hectares) and is capable of producing more than 130,000 metric tons of mussels per year.
