The Donghai Laboratory in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, was recently listed as a provincial laboratory, local media reported on May 9.
Built by the Zhoushan municipal government, Zhejiang University, and the Second Institute of Oceanography, the lab focuses on the research of marine environment perception, marine power system, and marine green resources.
Chen Ying, a senior expert in Zhejiang said that the lab should be aimed at establishing a high-end marine equipment industrial cluster in Zhoushan as well as a competent research team for underwater equipment.
The lab will be staffed with high-caliber experts from around the world, and will by 2025 have research teams with combined about 1,000 experts, according to Chen Wenbin, deputy director of the preparation office of the Donghai Laboratory.
Chen also noted that the lab will establish a 250,000-square-meter industrial park in Zhoushan to strengthen the research and development of key technologies that have broad application in the marine industry.
