Countryside road trips have become popular during the five-day May Day holiday, which ended on May 4, due to the ongoing outbreak of COVID-19.

Visiting urban parks, cycling, camping and touring countryside scenic sites and rural bed and breakfasts (B&B) are some of Zhoushan residents' favorite holiday travel choices.

The nine major islands in the island city logged 127,000 million tourists, a year-on-year decrease of 76.5 percent, while the occupancy rate of hotels and homestays in the city was down 23 percent from last year.

As of 4 pm on May 4, the Zhoushan Cross-sea Bridge received 95,000 vehicles and passenger throughput at the Putuoshan Airport was about 2,505, a 93 percent year-on-year decrease.

To stimulate the culture and tourism consumption market, the municipal bureau of culture, broadcasting, tourism and sports issued 1 million yuan ($150,000) in coupons as well as 23,000 other discount coupons over the five-day holiday, which resulted in more than 3 million yuan in consumption.
