The first intelligent garbage can was put into service in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, on April 15.

In addition to recycling garbage, the smart garbage can at the Jiasheng Huating residential community is equipped with a monitoring device, a weighing system, a classification evaluation system, and a wash basin.

Hazardous waste can be dumped directly into the garbage can while people who discard other types of garbage, including organic and recyclable waste, are required to swipe a card, scan their face, input their mobile phone number, or scan the QR code on the machine.

To promote garbage sorting among local residents, the garbage can has a screen that displays the scores earned by the residents from garbage sorting and dumping as well as the participation and accuracy rates of garbage sorting in the community.

The smart garbage can is expected to be made available at more residential communities in Zhoushan.
