Zhoushan in East China's Zhejiang province was home to 1.165 million permanent residents as of the end of 2021, 6,000 more than in 2020, according to the latest results published by the municipal bureau of statistics.

Among them, 841,000 are urban residents while 324,000 are rural residents. The proportion of urban residents to the permanent residents in the city, or the urbanization rate, was 72.2 percent, 0.3 percentage points higher than in 2020.

Dinghai district in Zhoushan topped its counterparts in the number of permanent residents and urbanization rate with respective figures of 503,500 and 76.23 percent.

The permanent resident population and urbanization rate of Putuo district, Daishan county, and Shengsi county in 2021 were 384,600 and 69.85 percent, 209,800 and 69.02 percent, and 67,100 and 65.88 percent respectively.

"More rural residents were relocating to urban areas, which will promote the development of a city in consumption, housing, and infrastructure construction," said an official from the bureau of statistics.
