Two power generation projects with a combined investment of about 13 billion yuan ($2.06 billion) in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, recently received approval from provincial authorities, Zhoushan Daily reported.

With a designed investment of 5.9 billion yuan, the third phase of China Energy Zhejiang Zhoushan Power Generation Co Ltd will establish two 660,000-kilowatt coal-fired generating units as well as environmental protection facilities for dust removal, sulfur removal, and denitration.

The other project is the second phase of the Zhejiang Energy Liuheng Power Plant. With an expected investment of more than 7 billion yuan, the project involves the construction of two 1 million-kilowatt coal-fired generating units as well as environmental protection facilities for dust removal, sulfur removal, and denitration.

The first unit will be put into operation by the end of December 2024 before it is connected to the power grid of Ningbo, a neighboring port city of Zhoushan, to ease the city's power demand.

The standard coal consumption of the two power plants are designed to be about 250 grams per kilowatt-hour, resulting in a reduction of 370,000 metric tons of standard coal and 980,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year.
