Zhoushan sees promising elderly care industry

Updated : 2022-01-19 (chinadaily.com.cn)

Zhoushan in East China's Zhejiang province has become an ideal place for people to retire.

With a good natural environment, a comfortable climate, complete infrastructure, and a booming economy, the city has been listed among the most suitable cities in China for elderly people to live.

In recent years, Zhoushan has been inviting retired teachers, doctors and engineers to work and live in the city, and Xie Yinlian, a retired cardiologist from Lishui, Zhejiang, is able to continue pursuing their career while enjoying a more comfortable life.

Xie has worked in the Putuoshan Community Health Service Center since 2020. "It is not only me who likes Zhoushan – my patients from other cities also like the city," said Xie. "Many of them have expressed their wishes to spend their retired life in Zhoushan."

In addition, Zhoushan is currently exploring ways to integrate rural revitalization with demand for elderly care in urban areas.

Suburban villages in Zhoushan have established a relatively complete medical service system and are suitable for the development of an elderly care service industry, said an expert from the city.

"Several villagers here have rented their houses to senior residents from urban areas," said Xu Huadong, Party secretary of Huangyangjian village, "These senior townspeople like our fresh air and scenic views."

Xu added that it is a good business opportunity for them and he will renovate the village's vacant houses to attract more senior people in an effort to develop the local economy.

Fang Jianyi, a professor at Zhejiang University Of Media and Communications, suggested that local authorities publish policies to support elderly care service projects in rural areas and offer jobs to senior townspeople who would spend their lives in rural areas.
