Zhoushan fisherman rescues malfunctioning yacht in Kiribati

Wang Lubin, a fisherman from Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, recently helped rescue a malfunctioning yacht in Kiribati, an island country in the central Pacific Ocean.

Wang works for the logistic base of Zhoushan Pacific Ocean Tuna Distant-Water Fishery Co Ltd in Kiribati.

On the day of the accident, Wang's colleagues were operating a ship to their fishing ground in the western Pacific Ocean. At 4 pm, they suddenly found a deserted yacht with its outboard motor covered by cloth floating far away from them.

Wang's colleagues told him about the abnormal conditions and he immediately informed the local police office and maritime affairs authorities.

With gale-force winds and rough waves, the tugboat sent by local authorities was unable to reach the scene of the accident immediately. As a result, the yacht threatened to float to the waters of other countries.

"There were around 300 boats operating on the nearby waters and six of them belong to our company," said Wang. "It's quite dangerous for such an immovable ship to float at night as it's possible that it will hit other ships."

Wang therefore proposed that his colleagues tug the boat and the malfunctioning yacht was safely tugged to the local port later that night.

The yacht, valued at 150,000 yuan ($24,000), belongs to a local premium hotel.
