Zhoushan in East China's Zhejiang province upgraded its emergency response to the highest level on Sept 12, closing schools and scenic spots, as well as suspending air and shipping services.

The center of the 14th typhoon of the year Chanthu was about 160 kilometers southeast of Zhoushan at 8 am on Sept 13, packing winds of around 45 meters per second, according to the Zhoushan municipal meteorological observatory.

Currently, Chanthu is moving northward at a speed of 25 km/h with weakening strength. It is expected to move northeast after Sept 15.

The observatory said that the typhoon is expected to either make landfall in the province's coastal areas between Zhoushan and Ningbo or pass through the Zhoushan Islands Monday morning. The storm is forecast to bring heavy rain and strong gales to Zhoushan from Monday to Wednesday.

Influenced by Chanthu, the wind level of the coastal areas in Zhoushan will reach 12 this day and that near the center of the typhoon will be 15 or higher.

Education authorities in the city have ordered the suspension of classes in kindergartens, primary and high schools, as well as off-campus training institutions on Monday or on both Monday and Tuesday.

All cultural and sports venues in Zhoushan have also canceled their activities. In addition, ships have returned to the ports and some parts of ship routes have also been suspended.
