A group of teachers and students from Zhejiang Ocean University (ZJOU) in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, volunteered to teach students in Northwest China's Qinghai during the summer vacation.

A Bangladeshi student with the Chinese name Fang Dan was the only overseas student among the Zhoushan volunteers.

Fang said that he is interested in teaching and has always been fascinated about various Chinese cultures. The activity gave him the opportunity to learn more about Chinese culture and the lifestyles of different regions in the country.

"I also learned that the elementary school where we taught had never had a foreign teacher before. It was my honor to create beautiful and meaningful memories with the students," he added.

During the class, the students welcomed Fang with warm applause and although they were too shy to answer Fang's questions, encouraged by the foreign teacher, they soon overcome their shyness and rushed to answer the question.

"Students liked my class very much and they would rack their brains to attract my attention," said Fang. "They would also say hi to me outside of the school."

ZJOU has organized the activity for three years and the main task is to familiarize Qinghai children with sea.

This year, the ZJOU volunteer team established a small-scale marine science museum, which consists of seafood specimens from Zhoushan, at the elementary school in Nangqian county. More than 1,700 local students have already visited the museum.
