Ma'ao village in Dinghai district, Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province was recently recognized as a national tourism village, local media reported on Aug 21.

The listed national tourism villages boast abundant cultural and tourism resources, well-preserved natural environment and traditional culture, a prosperous homestay industry, as well as complete infrastructure and public services.

In recent years, Ma'ao has made efforts to showcase its 6,000 years of history by renovating ancient wells, as well as establishing a ceramics craft center and a wall-painting corridor highlighting the village's culture and history.

Ma'ao currently has 12 homestays, all of which were transformed from local residential buildings or ancient buildings. They are managed by a professional company, creating jobs for local residents.

Ma'ao is also the first village in Zhosuhan to explore low-carbon development.

In 2018, Ma'ao was recognized as a provincial-level 3A scenic village. In 2020, the Ma'ao scenic area centering around Ma'ao village was upgraded to a national-level 3A scenic area and received 350,000 tourists in the year.
