The fisherman's song from Shengsi, a county in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang has been shortlisted as a national intangible cultural heritage item, according to a notice by the State Council on June 10.

With a history of nearly 1,000 years, Shengsi fisherman's songs not only reflect local fishermen's daily lives and work, but also bear witness to the development of the fishery industry in Zhoushan.

In recent years, local authorities have saved more than 60 fisherman's songs, composed over 30 new ones, established two studios and released two albums containing such creations.

Some 324 other intangible cultural heritage items also won national recognition.

Judges selected the new items out of 943 nominations from 11 categories, including folklore, traditional music, dance, opera, sports, arts, crafts, medicine, and, a new category, diet.
