Journalists from nearly 30 media outlets from China and abroad visited Mayi Island, once a barren island in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, on May 25, local media reported.

They visited Sanba seawall, the typhoon shelter fishing area, and the former site of the "people's commune", as well as interviewed representatives of local companies, female entrepreneurs, and fishermen to see first hand the spirit of residents of Mayi Island that have propelled its development.

"The tradition of hard work for residents of Mayi Island is an important part of the spirit of hard struggle for Chinese culture," said Yan Fangao, deputy editor-in-chief of African Chinese Weekly.

Yan noted that over the past 100 years, Chinese people in Africa have brought such a spirit to the continent and in the future, they will spread the spirit to the world.

After visiting the place where the military song Night at the Naval Port was composed, Zhang Weijia, head of a Chinese newspaper in the United States International Daily News, said that the red-tourism resources on Mayi island distinguish it from other islands.

Lin Bo, a journalist from the China News Agency, was impressed by the island's development in recent years, noting that the island not only boasts an improved appearance, but has also attracted many non-natives to start businesses here.

In recent years, Mayi Island has promoted the construction of a red culture education base, as well as launched special travel routes featuring red culture education, shipbuilding experience, and marine culture.

To date, the red culture education base on the island has received 4,837 visitors this year.
