More than 580,000 people visited Zhoushan in East China's Zhejiang province during the May Day holiday, local media reported on May 5.

With the COVID-19 epidemic subsiding, good weather, and a five-day long holiday, various scenic areas in the city saw strong recovery after being adversely affected by the epidemic last year.

For example, the number of tourists on Shengsi Island during the first two days of the holiday increased 13.19 percent than that of 2019, while the occupancy rate of hotels on the island reached about 85 percent this year, with boutique homestays being fully booked.

Most of the tourists in Zhoushan came from the Yangtze River Delta region, and they typically preferred self-driving tours or independent travel.

In addition to the traditional scenic areas in the island city, rural tourism, photo-shooting tours, and cycling around the island were also popular among Zhoushan's visitors.

The city's municipal bureau of culture, broadcasting, tourism and sports also organized 20 activities during the holiday that ran from May 1 to 5 to entertain local residents and tourists, including sports events, exhibitions, as well as art performances.

More than 500 law enforcement officers were dispatched to inspect sites for activities and business operation to ensure a safe environment.
