Zhoushan helps Dazhou shake off poverty

Updated : 2021-03-01 (chinadaily.com.cn)

Zhoushan in East China's Zhejiang province had allocated 219 million yuan ($33.82 million) to help lift Dazhou in Southwest China's Sichuan province out of poverty over the past three years, local media reported.

In 2018, in response to the central government's call for poverty alleviation, Dinghai and Putuo districts in Zhoushan started providing assistance to Xuanhan county and Wanyuan county-level city in Dazhou.

By the end of 2019, the two counties were removed from the national poverty-stricken counties list.

Zhoushan focused their poverty alleviation efforts on developing local industries. For instance, the city established 26,700 mu (1,780 mu) of industrial bases involving tea leaves, plum, and vegetables, bringing benefits to 55,000 poor people. It also encouraged 23 Zhejiang companies to invest 1.52 billion yuan in the two counties, and helped increase the income of 6,868 local poverty-stricken residents.

In addition, Zhoushan dispatched 92 specialized technical workers to help train 4,179 professionals and raised 49.12 million yuan in social funds and materials to improve the two counties' infrastructure, subsidize local students, and support local farmers.
